Kate Jennings is the founder of the Richmond-based clothing, vintage, and fragrance brand Na Nin — she's also a new mom who is constantly growing and evolving! We chatted with her about her about the power of scent, self-care, and natural products.
What inspired you to start Na Nin?
I was searching for a creative outlet and I’ve always enjoyed sourcing, curating, and styling vintage clothing. My love of nostalgia and the kindness of my mother are my greatest guides and sources of inspiration towards Na Nin.
What are some ways that scent can help de-stress and calm?
I think scent is so connected to memory that it has the power to take you to transport you mentally and emotionally. This has always been something I’ve turned to, but it was especially helpful in the past year in bringing moments of joy and calm.
What is your favorite Na Nin scent?
That’s a tough question! I have a few. :) Cripple Creek will always be dearest to my heart since that was the first scent released for Na Nin’s signature fragrance collection. But the candles I burn in heavy rotation are Somoto Canyon, Wild Tomato and our newest scent, Hinoki Forest.
How do you take care of yourself?
Taking baths, connecting with loved ones, and listening to music.
What are your medicine cabinet staples?
Before my son was born, I was prescribed medication for my mental health and it has completely changed my life for the better. My intense anxiety and manic episodes are now managed in a healthier and more balanced way. Though I used to feel ashamed to admit that I struggled with these experiences, they are now something I now feel empowered to speak openly about in order to destigmatize the conversation around mental health and wellness.
Why are natural products important to you?
Having natural/clean product options are wonderful - especially now that I’m a mother, it’s important to me to have more knowledge and awareness of what I consume and how it could affect my family’s well-being.
Any advice for someone interested in starting their own business?
Consistency - being willing to work on your business in some capacity every day has been a crucial part of my mindset. Don’t lose your drive!
What is bringing you that #getbetterfeeling right now?
My baby is bringing me the ultimate #getbetterfeeling :)
